Great Mindset

3 Ways to Get a Great Mindset

It is mid-year and how is your mindset? The year seems to be passing us by. I have been doing a lot of coaching focusing on ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts), and I wanted to share 3 helpful ways to get a great mindset with you! I use these tips myself because even I have ANTs at times. I’m only human.

Here are some awesome tips for you to help turn your mindset around and set yourself up for success on those days where you’re just not feeling it –

1. Set your focus

Set the tone for the day, by sitting down first thing in the morning and asking what you want from the day and from yourself? Having a focus for the day will help you feel energised and motivated, ready to smash some goals!

2. Say positive affirmations

You may feel a bit silly to start with, but there’s a reason so many people tout the benefits of positive affirmations – they really do work!

Use ‘I am’ phrases, e.g. I am strong, I am smart, I am worthy.

Before you know it, you’ll start believing your affirmations and feeling a lot better!

3. Think about your thinking

Take moments throughout the day to think about whether your thoughts are empowering or disempowering. Reflecting on these thoughts will help you identify the negative ones that don’t do any good, and you’ll you be able to start correcting these thoughts and making them positive. It’s hard to start this to begin with, so be patient with yourself.

Remember, we need to squash the ANTs; they stop us from reaching our full potential!

More GREAT TIPs

⭐️ Draw a Life Map and list out all your achievements and successes

⭐️ Write down key goals for yourself and what you can achieve today to take steps towards it

⭐️ You are the Director of your Mind. Only have award-winning thoughts on that stage

⭐️ Write down your ANT’s and laugh at them. I bet you can’t come up with any data to prove they are true

⭐️ Use I AM language. I am great! I am worthy! Watch your words – they have power

⭐️ Reach out to a confidant to tell them how you feel and ask for guidance or motivation

Mark Bouris Show

Mark Bouris Show – Lessons Learnt

I am brave and courageous. I am and I need to be.

I am a leader and entrepreneur.

Yesterday I really put myself out there. I arrived at the Mark Bouris Show in Sydney to pitch some ideas around my company LeadershipHQ, building a tribe and Leadership Magazine idea (help Jackie Frank!).

Let’s just say I felt like I crashed and burned. Well kind of. I learnt a lot of lessons from the experience. He did give me some valuable insights and advice. Watch it below…(I can’t just yet!)

I will keep pushing and driving my dream, vision and purpose. I will keep going, as I truly believe we are making a difference. I will never give up!

Then I spoke at the incredible Rarebirds Conference in Sydney with Jo Burston – what an honour. I spoke to around 100 aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs on Leadership for Entrepreneurs with the incredible Anna Lucia Mackay.

I was in heaven. I loved it. Great end to the day.

I thought I would share my top tips for Leadership for Entrepreneurs (- all of you really!), which I shared at my Keynote yesterday.

Remember I think we have made leadership bigger than what it is. Leadership is about mindset and attitude. Leadership is about making a difference.

  • Be Authentically YOU. Always be you. Own who you are. Be seen. I love Brene Brown’s definition of Authenticity

“ Is the courage to be imperfect, vulnerable, and to set boundaries.”

  • Focus on your WHY & PURPOSE. Your WHY is everything. Even when I get my knocks, I always pick myself up and say to myself what did I learn from that experience? I know I am making a difference in Leadership, that is my why and purpose.
  • Take them on the JOURNEY with you. Your journey matters. Take them with you. Dream it with them.

“Not the cry, but the flight of the wild duck leads the flock to follow.”  Chinese Proverb

  • Empower OTHERS to Lead. Leadership is about others. Listen to them. Care about them. Inspire them to Lead. Empower them to be the best they can be. Educate them to develop. Focus on their strengths (and yours).

“As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.” Bill Gates

  • Remember the BRAIN Stuff. Focus your RAS (Reticular Activating System) on your strengths, positives and passions! Watch this very cool video and it will change how you set you brain! You are the Director of your thoughts. Only have Oscar award winning actors (and actresses) on that stage!
  • Make them feel SAFE. We talk about keeping people safe. How about making them feel SAFE? Safe to be who they truly are? Let’s be inclusive everyday.
  • Put on the Oxygen Mask FIRST. You know how you get onto a plane and they give you the emergency spiel. You need to put the oxygen mask on first before assisting others? As leaders I think it is always important we put others first, however, if you don’t take of yourself first and foremost, how can you take care of others? You matter.
  • See the Evidence. Celebrate the SUCCESSES. Make sure you spend each day looking at what you have achieved, steps you have taken and successes you have made. This will inspire action and help you move forward. Leadership is about making a difference.
  • Surround yourself with your TRIBE. We can’t do it alone (I know I have tried!). We need our tribe. We need our supporters, team, mentors, coaches, friends – we need people around us that truly believe in us. Get the right people on the bus.
  • Let your PASSION be contagious. Passion matters. When those around you feel your passion, your why and purpose. They will want to follow. It is contagious.

My message yesterday at Rarebirds and frankly at every conference or program I speak at is – We are all Leaders. It is up to us to have a leadership mindset and attitude.

I love what Richard Branson said – and yesterday I just did it. I put myself out there. I was the best I could be.

“Screw it! Let’s just do it.”

DO IT! Screw it. Be Courageous. Be Brave. Put yourself out there. Be seen. Lead the Way. Go for your vision and dreams. Put your hand up. Ask. Do what you can to make a difference, change the world.

Start. NOW.

Thank you Mark Bouris, you helped me on the journey to be even more courageous.

Put yourself

Put yourself out there!

Let’s ignore the Tall Poppy Syndrome shall we?

“If people are trying to bring you down it only means that you are above them.”

I love this quote; doesn’t mean I feel like I am above anyone. However; I am over something. Have you heard of this thing called Tall Poppy Syndrome? Well, I refuse to let it stop me.

This silly and REAL syndrome where we try and pull people down. We don’t particularly like people who put themselves out there or we try and pull them down. Does this syndrome stop many of us shining or standing tall? What concerns me is how we are leading the way for our future and emerging leaders? Don’t we also want them to shine and speak up? This syndrome is real. I have seen it and also experienced it.

As David Beckham once said;

“When people criticise you, it is not a reason to give up, but to work harder and believe in yourself.”

I say bring it on and my advice is to ignore it; big time. It really says more about them than it does about you. Stand tall, own it and put yourself out there. Easier said than done.

Now as you can tell I put myself out there. I am passionate about my why, purpose and work; so to me it seems like a natural thing to do. My mindset around putting myself out there is; you only live once. The world is filled with opportunities. So why wouldn’t you put yourself out there? You ONLY live once!

We work with many leaders who are too afraid or don’t want to put themselves out there. They are scared of failing, won’t put up their hand, don’t want to be noticed or don’t believe in themselves.

Maybe you could start small. What does this look like? Maybe comment on some posts on social media? Write a blog? Connect with some new people on LinkedIn and ask them for a coffee? Get active on Twitter? Ask about opportunities or development at work? Start a small business? Speak at a conference? I could go on and on…

I remember last year being asked to speak at a Women in Technology breakfast on Mentoring. The room was packed and interestingly enough I noticed the women were not networking. I was told I couldn’t use the slides I had brought so had to speak off the cuff. Oh well, I thought I will share my thoughts on mentoring and how to put yourself out there to find a mentor; I didn’t need slides (even though I had awesome ones). There I was at the PwC building with the most incredible views of the city talking to a group of amazing female executives.

After I shared all my tips (plenty of them), I picked up a coffee cup and spoon and told the group we were going to play a networking game. The organiser of the event had the funniest reaction and said “Are we ready… NO?”. Everyone burst out laughing. I smiled and said yes we are. I banged the spoon against to cup and said let’s do some networking speed dating. The energy in the room was contagious. It was a great success. Let’s just say the organiser regretted her reaction and loved that we did it.

A few months later I was hosting a stand at the Women in Technology Xmas party; I spent the night talking to a number of women however I was exhausted. I started to a pack up early and got to chatting to two women. I was packing my books away when in the corner of my eye this women comes up to me. She says I was at the breakfast a few months back and are you leaving? I reply yes as I was shattered. She says to me I just want to let you know that you changed my life and she gave me this massive hug. I was in shock and ask how? She said after she heard me speak about putting yourself out there and finding a mentor; she found the courage to do it. She found a great mentor and she now feels so much more courageous and confident. I had tears streaming down my face and the women beside me who were listening were in awe. They said to me; I bet that is the reason you do what you do. I say Absolutely!

Thing is, if I can do it; you can! I refuse to go through life and no give it 110%!

Put yourself out, ask for the new role, put your hand up, ask him or her to be your mentor; just do it. If you get a no, say next until you find that YES. Always find that Yes. You are in control of your life, put yourself out there. NOW!

If anyone tries to pull you down, be kind and compassionate and always remember it is about them. Not you. Be you, own it and go for it! Cut down the poppy and truly shine bright.

Remember you ROCK! You got this.

Giving a Crap

Art of Not Giving a Crap

How would it feel not to give a crap? This week I spoke with Jane Hall on Talking Lifestyle Radio about Why Not Giving a Crap Can Change Your World. Yes not giving a Crap.

It is more challenging than you think.

Where do I start? I feel maybe the book is a good place to start as an analogy.

So I finally publish another book called Just Rock It! One of the best things I have ever done and also one of the most challenging. I wanted to write something that would change the world of Leadership and how we can all rock the world. I wanted to write something that would help everyone stand tall and shine with gusto. I wanted a book to stop poor leadership and bullying. I wrote this book for you.

Guess what, I made it the most challenging in my own head!

The one question I get asked about all the time after I published a book is “How long did it take me?” I published a book, does it matter how long it took! I felt like it took BLOODY FOREVER is what I want to say; however I always reply with – a few years and I wish I knew it was going to be as easy as it was as I would have done it sooner. The one thing that made the difference to finally, yes I mean finally after years writing it, was that I did not care what people might have thought of it. Crazy I know! It was the one blocker for me to get it finally finished. Then I decided I didn’t give a crap what others thought, only what I thought and what I accomplished. Easy isn’t it? Maybe not as easy as we think.

So here I am promoting a new book, it is a book about how to rock the world.

Last year, I read the book called the Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fu*k by Mark Manson. Have you read it? Yes there are a lot of Fu*ks in the book and it pretty much covers what I thought about life and yet had not been able to put my finger or maybe that word on it.

Thing is, it is true. Let me explore this with you as it is something I practice (well most days) and something I teach and coach in all my work. Essentially it is learning how to focus and prioritise your thoughts effectively – and how to pick and choose what matters to you and what does not matter to you based on your finely honed personal values? In turn, it is about the choices we make everyday. Bingo! Easy…

However, what resonated to me was the way he talks about how we NEED the negative experiences and struggles in our lives. Sometimes we need to get off this ban wagon of everything is perfect, let’s dance on the positive life of rainbows and post the 80,000 great things we have and do each day on Facebook – and maybe focus on the struggles and negatives. We are human if you had forgotten. We need the negatives to truly appreciate the positives. Side note – If you have not been exposed to Brene Brown’s work please google her too.

Let me share this with you, the most negative and devastating thing that happened in my life 13 years ago; ended up being the most defining and powerful change in my world. It was that day I made a choice to reinvent myself and reframed the experience (yes I did spend days crying in a corner grieving as well) as one which will make me. Have this ever happened to you? A negative experience ending up being a powerful or life changing one? However we don’t take risks or even believe in ourselves, as we fear the one thing that could shake us up?

In turn, there are days where I feel building and growing an amazing business whilst being a full time solo mum is such an incredible and exhausting struggle, but I get up and do it everyday. Why? Because it is my life and there are many great positive experiences that come out of it.

Let me share how I see myself. I am courageous and brave everyday. I am different and unique and I embrace this everyday. I don’t compare or try to be the greatest. I am enough and I am great already. I don’t think I am special or better than anyone else; I am living my life to the fullest to make a difference. Thing is; we are all special and we are all great.

So here I am, trying to make a difference to the world. Okay maybe not trying, I know I do. The one thing that has made the biggest impact to me making a difference is this – I don’t give a crap. I don’t give a crap with what people think that don’t matter to me, to the thoughts that don’t serve me, the worry and stress about things I have no control over and I don’t give a crap on the little things that don’t matter. I give a crap about my purpose, what makes me different, why I make a difference and how, my daughter and her well being and those people and parts of my life that mater. Truly matter. Yes holy crap; simple.

So where am I going with this. Yes it is about not giving a crap, it is about focus and choices and being the unique person you are. What it is really about and something I speak about all the time in my speaking and leadership work is –

We are going to die. Yes all of us.

I want to focus on only giving a crap about what I can do each day to be the best leader and person I can be. This is what leadership and life means to me. Not giving a crap about all the bells and whistles; but giving a crap on how I can make a difference to those and the world around me. How I can be the ripple effect.

Mark Twain once said –

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at anytime.”

I am not prepared to die anytime soon, however I know that I am not afraid to live life and go for it.

As Mark states in his book –

“You only have a limited about of fu*ks to give. So you must choose them wisely.”

That’s why I am I published Just Rock It! I really give a fu*k about it.

Give this a go, and watch your world transform. Practice the art of not giving a crap or giving a crap on what matters and let me know how you go!

Don’t be afraid. You got this.

We truly give a crap about Leadership. We want to create a world of Great Leaders and Great Leadership. We would love to make you rock.

Remember YOU ROCK! x

focus

Focus.

I remember going for an interview for a Senior Human Resources role here in Brisbane with a major government department.

I was really excited as well as being rather nervous.

I thought the interview went great. The CEO was really innovative and dynamic and we got along brilliantly. Then the search consultant called me to give me feedback.

Apparently the CEO also thought I was great (of course), however, he didn’t think I was the right fit. I asked why? He said I was an entrepreneur. What?! I recall replying – what does that mean? What is an entrepreneur…?

“Someone who can define the business they want to create, see where it is going, and do the work to get there.”

Mark Cuban – Owner of Dallas Mavericks, Blogger, Shark Tank Investor

That CEO did me a favour. Even though I think entrepreneurial thinking is an asset!

I didn’t realise it. I didn’t see it. Evidently, I did.

The thing with being an entrepreneur; we can lose FOCUS.

Let me share why and how this is a great strength and a great weakness.

We can’t stop thinking – and our brains are always buzzing. With ideas, innovations and new solutions to problems. We love to take risks and we are all about action. Brilliant.

I am always looking and chasing the butterflies and saying to those around me -what about this idea! That one! Let’s do this! Let’s create that!

Well maybe not so brilliant at times. I lose focus. Sometimes it is difficult to really achieve something when your mind is focussing on several different things. You are confusing the market – and you are confusing the universe. You can also confuse your team, your clients – and ultimately this detracts from your purpose. Then we can get tired, lose our passion and energy – it can become a vicious circle!

Focus…

I am not saying we are all like this. Also it doesn’t just apply to the entrepreneurs out there.

What I am saying is be careful on what you focus on – and what you are manifesting.

One of my past mentors emailed me the other day and said to me; Sonia I know you love what you do, remember your focus. We need people like that in our lives to help and support us in bringing it back to why we do what we do. Life is way too short to be doing a million thing just okay. It is more empowering and powerful to focus on your rocks; those big things; your purpose; your why and do it brilliantly.

I am truly passionate about my purpose and wanting to make a difference. However even I have to take a step back and look at where I am focusing my energy and thinking.

Remember –

“Attention Goes; Energy Flows.”

Truly focus on what you really want, your dreams, your why and your purpose. Manifest it everyday. You only live once and believe me time is our greatest resource. If there is something you are passionate about, something you truly want to achieve or you have that great idea, focus on it. It is amazing to see what will come back to you…

I promise.

Remember to always celebrate those small successes along the way too, and don’t lose focus.

I still love chasing my butterflies; however my focus is always front of mind…and heart.

Faking

Neuroscience of Faking It

One of the hottest catchphrases these days is the term, “faking it until you make it.” Despite its popularity, some people believe the saying is all about being an imposter. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Faking it until you make it,” is not about trying to bluff your way through a situation for which you are not prepared. There is a scientific, biological basis showing “faking it” can help give you the confidence that you need to keep pushing forward and achieve your goals.

The Importance of Neurotransmitters in Affecting Mood and Resolve

In the brain, serotonin and other hormones act as neurotransmitters of the electrical impulses that are behind our thoughts and feelings. Our moods and our will to act are influenced by how high the levels of these various neurotransmitters happen to be at the time

While it seems unreal that something so small can have such a big impact on our lives, the truth is that much of our behaviour, including how we react and are perceived by others in social situations, is influenced by these same chemicals. Even something as seemingly unrelated as our sleep, our appetites or even the level of physical attraction and arousal that we feel towards other is directly influenced by these compounds.

Scientific research has shown that we can actually influence the number of hormones that are produced and released into our bloodstream simply by altering and changing the position of our bodies!

Therefore “faking it,” until you feel it is useful. If you feel depressed, upset, or even afraid, the first step to changing how you feel is to change the posture of your body. Even the simple act of smiling can be enough to turn your feelings around and help you to feel happier than you did just moments before.

How Confidence Greases the Wheels of Success

So, what does changing your posture and putting a smile on your face has to do with your ability to achieve your goals? Absolutely everything!

Of all the character traits that exceptional leaders share, one of the most important is confidence. Those who can overcome obstacles and achieve peak performance for themselves and their organizations are known for being confident and upbeat. It is what fuels their resolve and determination.

Exceptional leaders can keep going and achieve their goals despite the odds stacked against them because they have such a high level of self-belief. They know that the only thing that can stop them from achieving their goals is their own self-doubt.

“Don’t fake it till you make it. Fake it till you become.”

Amy Cuddy

While a great leader may seem to overflow with confidence, the truth is that few of us are born that way. Therefore I truly embrace the concept of “faking it,” until you “become” it – it works! If you want to succeed you must first believe that you can and will succeed!

If you are feeling nervous, the simple act of standing up, and pretending to feel more confident is actually a great way to tap into the power of your subconscious mind. You’ll release the serotonin and other hormones that will stimulate positive feelings and give you the confidence that you lack!

As you practice using your face and posture to help you feel more relaxed and in control, you will begin to feel more upbeat and positive. You will then start to project a higher level of confidence and sureness that others will mirror back to you as you interact with them. This creates what is known as a positive feedback loop; a perpetual positive energy engine that continues to increase the production of the very neurotransmitters that are behind the feelings of positive self-worth and well-being!

Are you ready to be an awesome leader? Are you prepared to reach a new level of excellence in your leadership? It’s okay if you feel nervous as you face your goal. Just stare down the obstacles that stand in your way – you will succeed in your quest if you believe that you can!

Fake it till you make it? Go on. Rock that leadership role!

Passion, It Matters

Passion. It Matters.

Passion, It Matters to me. This might be a shock to you but I am SO passionate about what I do. I am passionate about my coaching, keynote speaking, writing, leadership training and making a difference.

Why? Easy. Leadership is my Why, Purpose, and Passion.

It matters. Truly matters.

Think of it like this. There are A LOT, I mean A LOT of consultants, companies and coaches that work in the Leadership space. We all pretty much have the same purpose (well I hope so!). Now, imagine working with a company or coach who didn’t have passion for what they do versus someone who truly loves and believes in what they do – and they show it! I bet you, you would want to work with the person who is passionate?

Martin Luther King, Jr. Richard Branson. Steve Jobs. Oprah Winfrey. All incredibly passionate leaders. They truly love and believe in their purpose and vision – and this is why we want more of it! People didn’t follow I think I might have a dream…they followed – “I have a dream!”

Passion is SO contagious. I do this Passion activity all the time in my workshop and events. I get on stage and I speak and facilitate with excitement, energy and passion. Then when I talk about our presence and how we are showing up, I suddenly change my whole energy and communication style. I become dull, bored and show a true lack of passion and energy. It is amazing to see everyone’s reaction in the room. They hate it! I do this to demonstrate why passion matters. We have something called Mirror Neurons. We automatically pick up the emotions of others.

Have you experienced sitting in your office and someone who has had a crap morning has just walked it and literally lumped it all over the office. They have been cranky, down or upset; and the whole energy in the room has changed. Yep! I bet you have!

I am not saying passion is about jumping around the room like the energiser bunny or yelling at the top of your voice. Some of the most passionate leaders I know and around the globe are actually introverts!

Passion is about believing in what you do, inspiring others to believe in it, and loving why you do what you do.

“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”

Simon Sinek

As a leader, it is vital to turn up with passion and be passionate about what you do. Okay, I am not Miss Passionate 24/7 but I always focus my mindset everyday around how I can be the best and use my passion to create change and greatness in others. In turn, somedays I have to do things I am not that passionate about, but I always focus on WHY I do what I do.

Also I have worked with and met the most remarkable people; construction workers, cleaners, sales assistants, nurses, counsellors and people who you might think at times might not have the most fulfilling or exciting jobs; but they always find the purpose and passion around what they do.

Have you ever watched that show The Uncover Boss? I LOVE that show. Why? It is just awesome to see these bosses, CEOs or Managers go under cover and speak to their talent on the ground. They listen and see why they love their jobs and what they do. It is always about the people and purpose. They find something about what they do that serves as a purpose and they are passionate. It shows too!

We all want to be passionate and we want to work with and be lead by people who are passionate.

In turn, if you are finding it difficult to be passionate or have passion in what you do. What do you need to change? Think about it.

I met with the Bronwyn Lewis, CEO of Think Pink. I have to say they do AMAZING work. Our conversation centered around why do people change their lives when they are sick and are told devastating news. PLEASE DO NOT WAIT! Find passion in what you do, find your why – or change it!

Life is WAY too short not to live and lead it to the fullest with passion.
